Aims
To provide an opportunity for personal development in applying prior theoretical and practical learning to a specific project and to demonstrate the ability to carry out a sustained piece of work.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Plan, design, execute and communicate a sustained piece of independent intellectual work using appropriate media; 2. work independently and apply knowledge and skills to the solution of a specific practical or theoretical problem; 3. critically assess research results and the work of others i.e. published material; 4. use relevant literature sources to carry out a detailed search into a general topic and specific scientific problem; 5. be competent in practical and manipulative skills in solving practical problems, and/or analysis of theoretical research; 6. prepare a detailed and structured report on the project, with a critical assessment of the work done and the results achieved, and appropriate recommendations from the conclusions drawn; 7. present clear oral presentations with appropriate and adequate use of supporting visual aid material; 8. manage their time, plan ahead and prioritise activities.
Indicative Content
The topic of the project will be the subject of negotiation between the student and the designated supervisor.
Teaching & Learning
Activity Supervision is arranged to ensure that the student progresses at an appropriate pace through his/her project and also draws upon his/her own initiative and store of relevant knowledge. Students will be expected to make full use of computing facilities, laboratories, special purpose equipment, library and other facilities. A student handbook of project guidelines is available to assist students in meeting the requirements of the project course.
Assessment
Written report - 80% 10,000 words maximum. Oral Presentation - 5% Giving an outline of the project plan. Oral or Poster Presentation - 15% Summary of the work done and conclusions drawn. Pass mark - 40% overall PDP - Pass/Fail Submission of completed PDP, CV, cover letter and job application. Evidence of attendance at employability events.
