ResNet - Internet in Your Room

Register for ResNet

Students can apply for Internet in halls of residence using our self-service registration system.

To register, plug your laptop or computer into the network socket in your room. Network cables are available from your local Student Union shop. Open up your normal web browser and follow the instructions presented on screen.

You will need your Student ID number and date of birth. Your Student ID number can be found on most of the correspondence you will have received from the University and will be in the format 000123456. You will need to enter your date of birth in the format DDMMYY, eg 010190 for 1st January 1990.

You will be asked to download and run an application that will check your computer meets the minimum requirements for access to the ResNet. When this is completed you will have Internet access.

Register Games Consoles

Games consoles can be registered for access to ResNet using the online registration form. You'll need to find the MAC address for the Ethernet (wired) port on your console. Information on how to find the MAC address for various consoles can be found on the registration site.

While this will allow you to access the Internet with your console, you will likely notice that the connection is reported as having a "Strict NAT" or "NAT Type 3." This can cause problems in some online multiplayer games, but is unavoidable due to the scale of the ResNet network.
