Date of release: Monday, April 20, 2009

A1670---Ed-Milliband-visits-MedwayEd Miliband MP, Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, learnt how scientists at the University of Greenwich’s Medway Campus are developing green technology during a visit on Saturday April 18. He was accompanied by Paul Clark MP for Gillingham & Rainham.

Ed Miliband said: “The work we saw at the University of Greenwich is a real example for the rest of the country. What we need is everyone, our scientists, people at universities and engineers, all coming together to provide the know-how and expertise which can help tackle climate change and create jobs in our economy.”

Dr Paula Carey and Dr Colin Hills from the School of Science’s Centre for Contaminated Land Remediation Centre demonstrated how they use Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) to decontaminate soil and waste so it can be re-used for secondary aggregate, engineering fill or specialist construction materials. The technology has the potential to capture significant amounts of carbon dioxide.
