Science jobs boost for Medway
Date of release: Monday, September 7, 2009
Medway's role as a centre of science expertise received a boost when the University of Greenwich at Medway announced the creation of nine new posts for specialist research staff in its School of Science. The university won funding for the posts as a result of its success in the national Research Assessment Exercise.
The new researchers will help to carry out pioneering work, finding solutions to the problems which face the world today, including detecting and treating diseases such as cancer, cleaning up brownfield land, and developing better biofuels. They will also supervise research projects by undergraduate and MSc students, whose numbers have grown considerably at the university over the last two years.
Appointed as Post Doctoral Fellows, the new recruits will join a team of over 90 staff in the university's School of Science, working with over 3,000 students in the UK and overseas. The school has a broad range of expertise, spanning pharmaceutical, biomedical, forensic and sports sciences as well as chemistry and geography. Its specialist facilities include an analytical services laboratory which provides materials testing services to industry.
Professor Martin Snowden, Head of the School of Science at the University of Greenwich at Medway, says: "This is an important development for the school, which will also benefit the economy of the region. The expertise of our academics can help businesses and other organisations in their work."
