Race Equality

  1. The University values the richness of the diversity of its students, staff and members of the local communities in which it operates and accepts the responsibility to promote good race relations at all stages of the process of delivering its teaching, research and consultancy services in the United Kingdom and overseas. We are committed to the promotion of equal opportunities for all and accept our responsibilities under the human rights directives and anti-discrimination legislation to implement codes of practice aimed at positive action to redress inequalities.
  2. In promoting equal opportunities, the University will develop effective measures for ensuring that all groups and individuals are able to work and study in an environment which is free from discrimination and harassment on the grounds of gender, race, ethnicity, colour, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family responsibility, trade union activity, religious or political belief. We aim to develop an environment enriched by our diversity and in which a culture of equity can be seen to flourish.
  3. The University will work towards the elimination of racism whether overt or covert both within the Institution and in all aspects of our collaboration with local communities and with partner agencies locally, nationally and internationally.
  4. In addition to implementing policies and practices which promote equality, the University will actively pursue policies for widening access and enhancing staff and student diversity on all campuses, with regular monitoring of our performance on this objective and of outcomes for staff and students from target groups.
  5. All students, employees and contractors are required to comply with this policy and to promote a culture which actively combats racism and values diversity and equality of opportunity in all areas of University life.
  6. The University will establish an ongoing monitoring and review system to assess the impact of our policies and their related activities, inform on progress and take   necessary action to spread good practice and tackle negative impact.
