Personal Profile

As a qualified teacher, geographer and social scientist Gavin Farmer has worked in secondary schools as a head of department and youth leader. He has also worked in the local government as a researcher and assistant education officer prior to becoming a teacher trainer at Avery Hill College. At the University of Greenwich he has successively been Associate Head of School, Director of Secondary Education, Director of Resources and Development, Head of Department and now Director of Learning and Quality in the School of Education and Training. Gavin Farmer's main interests are in education management and in curriculum change and in particular the possibility of brokering interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary studies related to the local community. He has also been responsible for the development of several degree programmes including combined and joint honours which now run successfully from the ECS department and for setting up a number of foundation degrees with partner colleges. Formerly he was a subject reviewer for the QAA for education and was actively involved at national level with the Geographical Association. Gavin Farmer has been, and remains an external examiner with a number of Universities and a consultant on the validation of degree proposals. He is also a member of Academic Council and several other committees.
