Personal profile
In Ian McNay’s 1.5 days of formal contract, he teaches on the PGDip/MA Higher Education and supervises research students on Master’s and PhD programmes.
He also teaches regularly for the University of Lausanne, Lancaster University and the Institute of Education, London, with occasional involvement in several other institutions, and has an ongoing advisory role at Salford’s Higher Education Research Centre. Ian McNay is the chief external examiner for the AUA Professional Certificate for HE administrators.
His research is done mainly in private time.
Current or recent projects include:
- A benchmarking exercise on the quality of governance in European universities
- A study of values and principles underpinning academic life and work and standards of both staff and students
- The impact of the Research Assessment Exercise on autonomy in social science research;
- A comparative study of systems of research quality assessment
His latest books are Beyond Mass Higher Education: Building on experience SRHE/Open University Press, 2006, and Higher Education and Human Good [with Jennifer Bone], Tockington Press, 2006. He edits Research into Higher Education Abstracts as part of his engagement with the Society for Research into Higher Education.
