Chris Ware lectures not only for the Greenwich Maritime Institute but also for the University of Kent's Certificate in Combined Studies. He is also an author and freelance researcher and has appeared several times on 'Who Do You Think You Are?' produced by the BBC as an expert maritime historian. He was formerly a curator at the National Maritime Museum (1977-99).

His many publications include The Bomb Vessel: Shore Bombardment in the Age of Sail (1994), a chapter on George Byng in Peter Lefevre & Richard Harding (eds). Precursors of Nelson (2000) and his new book Admiral Byng. His Rise and Execution (2009).

His current research studies submarine warfare in the First World War which will result in a further book to be published by Pen & Sword.

In October 2010 he started working on a seven month GMI research project The Unknown War with Spain 1727-1729.
