Research interests

Maritime labour has been my main research subject since 1998. This includes women seafarers, seafarers on cruise ships,  the labour market for seafarers especially that in China and in the Philippines, the political commissar and seafarers welfare in the PRC merchant  fleet, seafarers family life, the institutional and technical change and their impact to the crew and communication on multinational crewed ships. I have engaged in the following research projects:

Women’s Participation of Seafaring in European Fleets (1998)

Women Seafarers on Cruise Ships (1999-2001)

Seafarers Labour Market Survey in China (2000-2002)

The Role of Sailing Political Commissars in PRC Fleet (2001-2002)

Seafaring and Its Effect on Seafarers’ Partners (2001)

Penetrating Deep Inland: Ruralisation of the Seafaring Labour source for Shipping Capital in China (2003)

I also have a strong interest in the social and economic transformation in China and its implications to the Chinese workers in shipping but also in other industries. The current and recently completed research projects where I have been mainly or partly involved include:

Labour Market Segmentation in China’s Shipping Industry and Its Implications for Seafarers Employed on Foreign Ships (2004-2006, funded by the International Transport Workers Federation)

Women’s Prospect in the Service Industry in the Chinese Triangle (2003-2007, funded by ESRC)

China at Work: a National Survey of Changes in the Workplace (in the country’s automobile, textile, electrical/electronics and shipping industries( (2006-2007, jointly funded by Beijing Normal University, Beijing University, Zhongshan University, Chinese Social Sciences Academy and Beijing Social Sciences Academy)
