TRAN1009 - Methods, Problems and Issues in Maritime Policy
Focusing on the institutional context for maritime policy making, this course will introduce students to the study of maritime policy through identification of policy makers and consideration of the major issues that are the subject of policy developments and implementation. Students will gain knowledge of the main policy-making agencies in the maritime field and be aware of the main issues confronting them since 1950. Students will also come to appreciate the influences and constraints affecting the formulation and implementation of policy at national and international level, and be able to evaluate the effectiveness of maritime policies in light of their objectives. Topics include developments in sea use since mid-century; national political and governmental structures; international policy making agencies and institutions; fisheries management; environmental policy; manpower issues; registry issues and policies on port development.
