TRAN1010 - Defence and Security

Focusing on the naval aspects of maritime policy, this course will provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the factors influencing the use of naval power in the 20th century by maritime nations, with particular attention to recent developments. Students will be able to understand the origins of naval strategy and its development over the last 100 years and be able to relate that strategy to the political and economic context. Topics covered by this course include: the development of naval strategy; the law of armed conflict; navies and international humanitarian law; the role of naval power in the cold war era; the contemporary use of naval power and naval strategy.
