Public Shipping Law

This course provides a legal background to the analysis of maritime policy. The interaction between international conventions, the operation of international customary law and the principles underpinning judicial decisions, provide a set of guiding parameters from which governments formulate and implement maritime policy. The course examines the legal regime of the oceans at regional and global levels, providing a basis for a thorough analysis of the core factors contributing to the development of maritime policy at domestic and international levels. Students will develop a working knowledge of legal research methods and appreciate the legal regime of the seas as well as the impact of legislative conventions on policy formulation and implementation.

Students are assessed on two essays of 2000 words and one oral presentation.
