20th Century International Maritime History (20 credits)

 

Course Schedule

This course runs every Thursday for 15 weeks from 10am - 12pm. The terms dates are from 12th January to 29th March 2012, there is then a break for Easter and classes resume from 26th April to 10th May 2012. 

 

Course Content

This course focuses on the key developments in the world shipping industry over the 20th century. Students will acquire an analytical understanding of the economic, technological, social and political factors influencing international maritime developments during this period. They will also be able to compare and contract the histories of the major national merchant shipping fleets in the 20th century and be able to analyse developments in the world shipping industry.

  • 20th Century Maritime History - Japan
  • 20th Century Maritime History - Greece
  • 20th Century Maritime History - Norway
  • International Maritime Governance

 

Course Format

This course is taught in two hour weekly sessions for 14 weeks in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, UK. The classes are taught in small groups with students registered for the MA Maritime History degree programme.

Basic weekly reading materials will be provided electronically to enable students to prepare for the topic of the week.

 

Assessment Option

This course is equivalent to 20 credits at postgraduate level if the assessment of two 2,000 word essays are successfully completed by the submission deadline set. Any credits accumulated may then be put towards the full MA Maritime History if the student wishes to apply to continue their studies in the GMI.

 

Fee

The tuition fee for this 15 week course is £433.33 for UK and EU applicants, £1,038.89 for International applicants. (Note: These are 2010 fees, the the 2011 fees will be puiblished shortly)

 

Entry Requirements

Applicants are expected to have:

  • A good honours degree or equivalent qualification AND/OR
  • Relevant personal or professional experience acceptable to the Director.
