20th Century International Naval History (20 credits)

 

Course Schedule

This course runs every Thursday for 15 weeks from 3.30pm - 5.30pm. The terms dates are from 12th January to 29th March 2012, there is then a break for Easter and classes resume from 26th April to 10th May 2012.  

 

Course Content

This course provides insight into the factors influencing the use of naval power in the 20th century. It relates naval strategy to the political, economical and technological context, focusing on naval warfare in the First and Second World Wars, on inter-war naval limitation and seapower in the nuclear age.

Subject areas include:

  • Seapower from Manila Bay to Heligoland Bight
  • Seapower and the First & Second World Wars
  • Limitation Navies
  • Seapower and the Japanese War
  • Maritime Strategy for the United States
  • The New Navies
  • The End of the Age of Simplicity
  • The Navy in the 21st Century

 

Course Format

This course is taught in two hour sessions once a week for 15 weeks in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, UK. The classes are taught in small groups with students registered on the MA Maritime History degree programme.

 

Assessment Option

This course is equivalent to 20 credits at postgraduate level if the assessment of two 2,000 word essays are successfully completed by the submission deadline set. Any credits accumulated may be put towards the full MA Maritime History if the student wishes to apply to continue their studies with the GMI.

The assessment is not compulsory for those wishing to attend the course for leisure.

 

Fee

The tuition fee for this 15 week course is £433.33 for UK and EU applicants, £1,038.89 for International applicants. (Note: These are the 2010 fees, the 2011 fees will be published shortly)

 

Entry Requirements

Applicants are expected to have:

  • A good honours degree or equivalent qualification AND/OR
  • Relevant personal or professional experience acceptable to the Director.
