Themes in British Maritime History Since the Late 18th Century: The Royal Navy (20 credits)

This course runs every Thursday from 10am to 12pm from 29th September to 15th December 2011.
Course Content
Using a broadly thematic approach, this course introduces students to key developments in the Royal Navy from the late 18th century, and to the state of scholarly debate on these issues. It will enable students to develop knowledge and critical understanding of significant aspects of Britain's naval history in the modern period. Students will gain an analytical appreciation of the political, strategic, technological, economic and social factors influencing British naval development as well as being conversant with debates surrounding the major issues.
Subject areas will include:
- Peak and Decline - Britain as a New World Power
- The Loss of the American Colonies
- The Wooden World
- Peace and the Pacific
- War Against Revolutionary France
- War Against Napoleon
- The Victorian Navy and Pax Britannica
- The Crimean War
- The Fisher Era
Course Format
This course is taught in a two hour session once a week for 12 weeks in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, UK. The classes are taught in small groups with students registered for the MA Maritime History degree programme.
Basic weekly reading materials are provided electronically to enable students to prepare for the topic of the week.
Assessment Option
This course is equivalent to 20 credits at postgraduate level if the assessment of two 2,000 word essays are successfully completed by the submission date set. Any credits can then be put towards the full MA Maritime History degree if the student wishes to continue their studies in the GMI.
The assessment is not compulsory for those wishing to attend the course for leisure.
Fee
The tuition fee for this 12 week course is £433.33 for UK and EU applicants, £1,038.89 for International applicants. (Note: These were the 2010 fee, the 2011 fees will be published shortly)
Entry Requirements
Applicants are expected to have:
- A good honours degree or equivalent qualification AND/OR
- Relevant personal or professional experience acceptable to the Director.
Where English is a second language an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is required.
