Themes in British Maritime History Since the Late 18th Century: The Merchant Navy (20 credits)
Course Schedule
This course runs every Thursday from 1pm - 3pm, from 29th September to 15th December 2011.
Course Content
The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop knowledge and critical appreciation of significant aspects of Britain's maritime history in the modern period. Students should gain an analytical understanding of the economic, technological, social and political factors influencing maritime developments since the late 18th century. Through the reading of recommended secondary sources students will appreciate the variety of discipinary approaches which have been utilised in the study of the maritime past, and be conversant with debates surrounding the major issues.
Subject areas will include:
- The British Shipping Industry Over Two Centuries
- Shipping as a Business: Owning and Managing Vessels
- From Sail to Steam: The Liner Trades
- Tramps and Coasters
- Shipbuilding
- Government and the Shipping Industry
- Safety at Sea
- Ports and Harbours
Course Format
This course is taught in a two hour session once a week for 12 weeks in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, UK. The classes are taught in small groups with students registered for the MA Maritime History degree programme.
Basic weekly reading materials will be provided electronically to enable students to prepare for the topic of the week.
Assessment Option
This course is equivalent to 20 credits at postgraduate level if the assessment of two 2,000 word essays are successfully completed by the submission date set. Any credits can then be put towards the full MA Maritime History degree if the student wishes to continue their studies in the GMI.
The assessment is not compulsory for those wishing to attend the course for leisure.
Fee
The tuition fee for this 12 week course is £433.33 for UK/EU students and £1,038.89 for International Students. (Note: These were the 2010 fees, the 2011 fees will be published shortly)
Entry Requirements
Applicants are expected to have:
- A good honours degree or equivalent qualification AND/OR
- Relevant personal or professional experience acceptable to the Director.
Where English is a second language an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is required.
