Social Political & Cultural Studies

The department of Social, Political & Cultural Studies (SPCS) brings together twenty-four academic staff who teach and research in a variety of subject areas. We cover four subjects - History, Politics, International Studies, and Sociology are offered as a single honours degree programme, whilst Languages and Philosophy can be taken in combination with other disciplines.
Many of our students pursue a combined degree and we encourage our students to explore the interrelation of historical, philosophical, political and sociological issues, pursuing their interests across and beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Studying with SPCS provides students with a rigorous and flexible training in the Humanities tradition. As well as specialist training in their chosen field, students are encouraged to think critically and independently. Many of our courses provide opportunities for work placements and independent research and all of our degrees provide a firm platform for a variety of professional careers.
