Dissertation

DissertationCourse Convenor: John Mclean
Course Code: COGA 1005

Students may work on a dissertation of about 8,000-10,000 words in the third year in place of a taught course.  The dissertation gives students in History, Philosophy or Politics the chance to work and study independently, and also gives them a direct insight into how serious research in these (and related disciplines) is conducted.

The dissertation will not suit all students, and usually only a minority of students of students chose this option.  It is, therefore, particularly important that those students who are interested speak to their tutors about possible topics which have to be agreed in advance, normally before the end of the second year.  Students should also ask their subject group leaders for more detailed guidance on what doing a dissertation involves before coming to a firm decision.
