Careers in Sociology
Sociology opens up work opportunities in a variety of areas as the skills acquired are useful in a range of roles. Sociology prepares you for work requiring an ability to analyse complex issues and to develop policy. Many graduates are interested in work related to supporting individuals and groups within society. Some occupations for which are Sociology degree would be especially useful include:
Teaching: Many students follow a Sociology Degree with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) that allows them to teach in primary or secondary education.
Social Services: Sociology is especially useful for jobs in community organisations and social services agencies. This includes jobs in youth and neighbourhood centres, environment groups, housing associations, etc.
Public Sector Jobs: This includes jobs in government departments and also in local councils. Areas that might be especially applicable include family support services, health, welfare, immigration, etc.
Social Research and Data Collection: Sociology provides a strong foundation for jobs in the areas of research and data collection. For example jobs related to the collection of census data and other social data.
Other areas include: criminal justice; personnel management; information services; and charities.
