Broad-based Programme

At Greenwich you take some core courses that provide a foundation in the historical and contemporary debates within Sociology. You then choose between a wide range of courses offered within the Programme and supplement these with options from any subject area within the Humanities and Social Sciences. Courses in Sociology cover topics such as gender; ethnicity; popular culture; global politics; sociology of emotions; sociology of education; crime and deviance and many more. In your final year you can choose to do either a supervised sociology project or a work placement – both options allow you to develop further your own interests and to implement the research skills you have acquired during your earlier years.

Specialisations

While we offer a broad based programme of study we also enable specialization in various areas. At Greenwich we have three areas of particular expertise: Applied Sociology, Global Studies and Cultural Sociology. Applied Sociology provides a strong foundation for a range of career directions. It involves learning research skills and applying them to your own areas of research interest. It also involves undertaking courses such as Sociology of Education where you focus on sociological perspectives in a particular career area. Global Studies examines issues of ethnicity, cultural diversity and international relations. This area allows you to develop further understanding of theories about race and ethnicity as well as debates about globalization and post/colonialism. Cultural Sociology focuses on how culture is produced and consumed within society. At Greenwich we offer courses looking at popular culture, drug use in society and cultural aspects of emotions and relationships.

Employability

At the University of Greenwich we place particular emphasis on guiding and supporting students as they move toward employment. We offer seminars that discuss career options for Sociologists as well as workshops that help you build your CV, interview skills and so on. You will be encouraged to pursue opportunities regarding summer jobs, internships and voluntary jobs all of which are invaluable in strengthening you future employability.

Diverse and Active Student Body

The University of Greenwich welcomes students from a range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Whatever your background you will feel comfortable studying in this environment. In addition, Sociology students are actively involved in the student-run Sociology Club and are given many opportunities to get together to discuss their studies as well as other issues.
