Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust (SBBOT) is located on the Kent coastline in the Sandwich and Hacklinge Site of Special Scientific Interest, the floodplain of the river Stour that lies between the White Cliffs of Dover to the south and the Isle of Thanet to the north.

The primary function of SBBOT is that of an accredited Bird Observatory, monitoring migration and carrying out a scientific programme of bird ringing, in support of national and international projects. The organisation also monitors and records the butterflies, dragonflies and unique flora of the area, which include many rare species of orchid and fungi. Over 20 species of dragonfly have been recorded in the area; a significant number for Kent. This work began in 1952 and a significant database has been collected, establishing changes in species and numbers. Currently the work is carried out by the Warden, Ian Hodgson, with the help of a team of volunteers.

SBBOT has a modern well equipped Field Centre with accommodation for visitors to the area. Other facilities include a well stocked shop for naturalists, a library for members’ use, a laboratory/classroom and a large fully equipped lecture hall. A programme of weekly events for members and non-members includes guided walks, talks and workshops. The Field Centre is open 10.00 - 16.00 daily with the help of volunteers, who also maintain a number of reserves that are owned and/or managed by the Trust.

The Field Centre will provide a location where students can get real hands on experience of conservation and survey work and where they will have the opportunity to analyse data, collected since 1952, on all aspects of the local flora and fauna of this unique area of the country. It will also provide a quiet retreat from the hurly burly of college life!
