Scientists in this group are nationally and internationally known for research work and have expertise in the fields of public health and clinical nutrition. They have ongoing collaboration with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Beijing University Hospital, University of Cambridge, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), University of Paris, and St Thomas’ Hospital.
Other collaborators include the Institute of Sustainable Livelihoods, at the Vaal University of Technology, South Africa; the Centre for Human Nutrition, University of Sheffield; University of Ghana medical school, Africa Harvest Biotech, the University of Ghana and the Ghana Health Service. Recent projects
- Maternal and infant nutrition in developing and developed countries, including dietary interventions.
- Breast milk nutrient composition in different populations.
- Nutritional interventions in the management of children with HIV in South Africa and Kenya, using whey-based high-protein sources and traditional nutrient-enriched food multi-mix recipes.
- Development of high-fibre, low glycaemic index (GI) food products for nutritional management of type II diabetes.
- Developing integrated nutrition and health models for school feeding and school-based health programmes.
- Developing culturally specific nutrition education and dietary interventions for type II diabetics.
- Development of gluten-free diets, employing the food multimix (FMM) concept.
- Application of FMM to school meals in developing countries.
