Biography

Andrew is a graduate of St. Andrews University and undertook his PhD research at Durham University looking into sea-level changes in the Moray Firth area during the last 12,000 years or so. Three further years of postdoctoral research at City of London Polytechnic investigated the Holocene expansion and decline of the Caledonian pine forest in the Rannoch Moor area.

Areas of Expertise

losing coring equipmentMain techniques used include pollen and diatom analysis, interpretation of stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating. These are widely used in the broad field of reconstructing environmental history and charting early human alteration of the environment. More recently he has been working with archaeologists to provide environmental interpretation on sites due to be developed or redeveloped.

During his long career he has become a master at losing coring equipment.

Present research topics include:

  • Pliocene to Holocene land and sea-level changes in south-east England
  • Co-authorship (with Colin Whiteman of Brighton University) of a Geological Conservation Review volume on the Quaternary of southern England http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-2986

Andrew’s teaching areas include basic physical geography, Quaternary environmental change, environmental archaeology, applied geomorphology and past, present and future climate and environmental change.  He is currently supervising 4 undergraduate projects and is a personal tutor to Level 1 and 2 students. Recently he became link tutor to Hadlow College, one of our partner institutions
