Biography

Dr Pedley is a business development manager supporting two principal areas of interest within the School of Science: research into sustainable (bio) energy and promoting scientific consultancy services to the business community. He has extensive experience in laboratory management gained as a scientist and research manager in industry and in technical marketing deriving from a variety of commercial roles. He has a particular interest in quality management approaches and is an on-line tutor in Quality Systems Management.

His expertise derives from a broad based career in industry spanning many research and commercial roles. After completing a BSc (hons) in chemistry followed by a PhD in physical chemistry at King’s College, London, Dr Pedley joined Shell Research where he held nine posts over a period of eighteen years. Research interests included formulation and colloid chemistry working for Shell’s Agrochemicals Business, membrane and other separation processes in refineries, enhanced oil recovery techniques and oilfield application of biopolymers. After short periods outside research, including chemicals marketing, reservoir engineering and HR, he became a section manager in Analytical and Formulation Chemistry at Shell’s Biosciences Laboratory. At this time in the early 90’s, with responsibility for a number of laboratories and research programmes and working within a GLP framework, he developed a keen and necessary interest in quality systems management.

In the mid 90’s he left Shell and became sales and marketing director for a world leading manufacturer of optical instruments where he managed the global sales business for nine years. Then in 2006, following a two year period as a self-employed business adviser and consultant with particular focus on business planning, he joined the University in a business development capacity to head up the newly formed Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL), specifically with a view to gaining accreditation to ISO 17025 and to implement quality management practices within the School of Science.
