An Introduction to the Awards Ceremonies 2010

Graduates at the Old Royal Naval College

University of Greenwich Awards Ceremonies

An introduction from Dionne Glennon, Head of Awards, Exams & Standards

Our Awards Ceremonies are an important event in the university's year and an opportunity for university staff to celebrate the academic achievements of our students, together with their families and guests. Months of planning go into the organisation of the awards ceremonies, which involve a great many of the university departments including Facilities Management, Public Relations, Marketing and Alumni, as well as outside organisations. We have local civic dignitaries attending and participating in the proceedings as well as special guests who have links with the the university and its Schools.

We are also privileged to award honorary degrees during our ceremonies and details of this year's honorary awards can be found on our Awards Ceremonies website.

Awards Ceremonies are organised by the Awards, Exams and Standards section of the Office of Student Affairs, and just like our students, we eagerly await the final decisions of the Progression and Awards Boards before we can put the final preparations into place, which include amongst other things the printing of individual degree certificates and transcripts which are handed out during the ceremonies to successful graduates. We send out a detailed information brochure along with an invitation and reply form in March 2010 to all final year students wishing to attend their ceremony in July 2010.

The Awards Ceremonies take place in July and October every year; our ceremonies are held in the Old Royal Naval College Chapel, Greenwich, with a drinks reception for graduates and their families in the magnificent Painted Hall, and also in Rochester Cathedral, England's second oldest cathedral, where our graduates process along Rochester High Street for a reception in the beautiful gardens of the cathedral.

We are very grateful to the staff of the Greenwich Foundation and Rochester Cathedral and the assistance of our student stewards and members of staff who volunteer on the day to ensure that our ceremonies run smoothly and are enjoyed by all.
