When will the 2011/2012 exams take place?

The University's 2011/2012 exam session is scheduled to take place during May 2012. All schools will hold exams during the three week period between Monday 14th May 2012 and Friday 1st June 2012. Some schools may also be holding exams during January 2012. Resit exams will be held during August 2012 and all resits will take place between Monday 20th August and Friday 31st August.


 

How will I know if I have an exam to take?

Your personal BannerWeb record will give you details of what exams you will have to take. Your school, course tutor or programme leader can also advise you. The published timetable will give you the dates times and venues for your exams.

How can I access the Examination Timetable?

You can access the examination timetable via the link on the Examinations home page or via the link on the "my learning" tab on the portal.

Each School shall have its own individual exam timetable. If you are studying courses run by more than one school please ensure you check the relevant School Exam Timetable. You are advised to check the timetable carefully and on a regular basis for any last minute changes. This is especially important the day before your exam.

What time do the exams start?

Where will I take the exam?

The Exam Timetable will show the date, the time and the location of where the exam will take place. Some larger exams may be held at an external venue to accommodate all students taking the course. Directions and maps are available on the web pages.

Please be aware that it is your responsibility to check the university web pages for the exam timetables and to find out when and where the exams will be taking place.

You are advised to check the timetable carefully and on a regular basis for any last minute changes. This is especially important the day before your exam.

Where is Holly Hedge House?

Holly Hedge House, Wat Tyler Road, SE3 0QZ, is situated on Blackheath Common off to the left of Shooters Hill Road before it exits to Blackheath Hill. The nearest British Rail Stations are Blackheath and Lewisham. Bus routes serve the surrounding area. There are no car parking facilities at Holly Hedge House or in the surrounding area. Holly Hedge House is private property and the access gates will not normally open until 9.15am excepting in extreme weather conditions. There are no refreshment facilities available at Holly Hedge House, students arriving early will find cafes in Blackheath Village and Lewisham. Can I telephone the university to get my exam dates/times?

NO. Students are responsible for checking when their exams are taking place by consulting the exam timetable on the university web pages. Staff can advise you where to look or talk you through locating the timetable if you are having difficulties. You can call 020 8331 8785 for help and assistance but staff will not be able to give out information regarding dates and times of specific exams. You are advised to check the timetable carefully and on a regular basis for any last minute changes. This is especially important the day before your exam.

What if I have an exam clash?

In devising the exam timetable every effort is made to prevent exam clashes. If a student has an exam clash i.e. more than one exam timetabled at the same time and on the same day, please e-mail the central exams office immediately: examsoffice@gre.ac.uk, giving full details.

What do I need to bring to the exam?

What if I forget my exam labels?

If you forget your exam labels you must write your University ID number in the space provided on the exam answer booklet instead. Full details about completing the front cover of the exam script will be announced by the invigilator at the beginning of each exam. Avery Hill and Medway students do not use labels but will write their ID number in the space provided.

How do I know if I am permitted to use a calculator during my exam?

Your course tutor will be able to advise you. Calculators will not be provided by the University and will not be available in the exam room. You must bring your own, non programmable, calculator in to the exam with you. You are advised to check well in advance that your calculator is in good working order.

Am I permitted to use a dictionary?

University policy is that use of translation dictionaries in exams will not be allowed during exams.

The policy on dictionary was approved and implemented by University Academic Council in consultation with the Learning and Quality Committee in 2009. The policy is effective for all students, even those who may have been given permission for use of a translation dictionary prior to 2009. No further use of a translation dictionary in exams will be allowed.

Can I bring food and drink with me?

You may bring water, a drink, sweets or a small piece of fruit with you for refreshment. Your drink should be brought in a plastic bottle and not a can. Food e.g. crisps or a sandwich is not permitted.

Candidates with a verified medical condition will be allowed to bring a suitable provision.

What do I do with my personal belongings?

You are advised not to bring any personal or valuable belongings with you as personal belongings are not allowed to be on or by your exam desk. You will be required to place coats, bags and belongings to the back or one side of the examination room. Mobile phones, 3G, Wi Fi, ipad or similar devices are STRICTLY NOT PERMITTED to be on the exam desk or on your person during the exam. Invigilators must not be expected to, and will not, take responsibility for any students' personal valuable belongings.

What if I am ill or otherwise unable to attend on the day of the exam?

If, on the day of an exam, you are unable to attend for reasons beyond your control you must telephone your School on the relevant number below, and report your absence before the start of the exam.

Please be advised that the above numbers will be open from 8.00 a.m. during the exam period and you will be required to provide your full name, student number, details of the exam and the reason for your non-attendance.

If you are unable to sit the exam due to illness you must complete and submit an extenuating circumstance form attaching the appropriate evidence in support of your illness e.g. a doctor's note.

What do I do if I am late for an exam?

You are advised to make your way to the exam room immediately and report to an invigilator. The senior invigilator is responsible for deciding whether you may be allowed to undertake the exam but late arrivals will not be allowed entrance to the exam room after the first 30 minutes. Late arrivals will not be entitled to extra time at the end of the exam.

What do I do if I am more than 30 minutes late?

You are advised to report immediately to your school office.

When will I receive my exam results?

You can access your exam results via Banner web self service as soon as they have been confirmed by the Progression and Award Boards.

Can I contact the exams office for my results?

NO. The exams office is unable to give result information.
