Health & Safety
Under health and safety legislation, the University is required to manage health and safety for its staff, students and others that may be affected by its activities. The University’s Health and Safety Policy sets out its organisation and arrangements for this. Copies of the Policy, and other documents dealing with health & safety matters, are available to students in campus libraries and can be viewed and downloaded from the University Health and Safety pages. Under the Policy, the Vice-Chancellor has overall responsibility for health and safety, but all staff and students also have responsibilities. Heads are responsible for local arrangements within their School or Office. Heads appoint Local Safety Officers to assist them.
All students have similar general responsibilities to University staff, and these are stated in the University Health and Safety Policy. While on University premises or field trips you must:
- take care that your actions do not put yourself or other people at risk;
- follow health and safety instructions/rules;
- report any faults or shortcomings in health and safety arrangements to your academic supervisor.
More specific responsibilities will be included in School or Halls of Residence rules, which should be explained to you during inductions. All students without exception are expected to comply with all health and safety regulations operating within the University and, in the case of laboratories, workshops and other hazardous places, to acquaint themselves with these regulations. Failure to do so is a serious breach of University regulations.
- If you are concerned about any safety issue:
- speak to your academic supervisor, particularly on course matters.
- contact your School’s Local Safety Officer (the School Office will be able to tell you how).
- there are student representatives on School and University health and safety committees.
- on accommodation matters, speak to a Resident Assistant in the Hall, or contact your Accommodation Office or Campus Facilities Management Office.
If your safety concerns cannot be resolved locally, you can contact the University Safety Unit on Ext. 9001, [email safetyunit@gre.ac.uk].
If you have concerns about personal safety or security, within the University’s premises or outside, contact the Campus Facilities Management Office. For practical purposes, in an emergency, students should contact their Campus Security / Reception.
